Homer taxis offer free rides home on New Year’s Day

Think you might be getting blotto this New Year’s Eve? You could get a ride from the bars in a shiny white cruiser. A nice person in a snappy blue or black uniform will drive you. After check-in, you’ll get some black-and-white striped pajamas to sleep in, and enjoy the comfort and security of a steel cot in a windowless room.

That’s if you’re lucky. If you’re unlucky, your other ride could be in a lime green truck, strapped in a gurney and severely injured — or dead.

If the idea of getting busted for driving under the influence or taken to the hospital doesn’t appeal to you, there’s one other option for getting home safely after a bit too much New Year’s Day celebration: the annual free taxi cab rides offered by Homer’s taxi companies. From 7 p.m. New Year’s Eve to 7 a.m. New Year’s Day, Kostas Cab, Chux Cab and KacheCab offer free rides within the greater Homer area. Sponsored by all the bars and liquor stores, the service has been offered since 2001.

“Every year we’ve provided this service there have been zero DUIs,” said Toy Bairamis, owner with her husband, Nick, of Kostas Cab.

“That’s always the goal,” said Chris Fischer, who runs KacheCab with his parents Peggy and Dan Fischer.

Kostas and Chux will take passengers straight home in the area from the top of West Hill and East Hill roads and to the intersection of Diamond Ridge Road and Sterling Highway. Fischer said KacheCab would drive people from Diamond Ridge Road to Fritz Creek.

Homer Police and Alaska State Troopers plan to be out in force this weekend. As part of a statewide effort to cut down on drunk driving, local police and the troopers have made 341 DUI arrests statewide since July. Under the “You Drink and Drive. You Lose” and “Holiday Blitz” campaigns, police and troopers have been working overtime to stop drunk drivers. The “Holiday Blitz” runs through Jan. 2.

Ringing in the New Year in Anchor Point? The Anchor River Inn offers bargain rates of $25 a night if you want to sleep off a little too much revelry.

Bairamis said her drivers have volunteered their time, but will keep any tips they get. The other companies said their drivers would appreciate tips, too. All the taxi companies offer a pick up service for a fee to pick up later vehicles left at bars.

For rides, call Kostas at 399-8008, Chux Cab at 235-2489 or KacheCab at 235-1950.
